It's great to see you getting such well-deserved recognition. However, I was surprised to learn that you consider yourself an "amateur". I think you undervalue yourself enormously. While I'm sure that your actual income from theater fluctuates wildly, as does most people's, the quality of your work, your stature in the New York theater community and the great artists you've chosen to work with make you a complete professional, IMHO.
Also, on behalf of the company where one of the shows you mention was produced, I want to take issue with your description of roles in our productions as "roles professional actors would have to turn down". While our remuneration is small, we have had a remarkable amount of success attracting great professionals to work with our company. This link, in particular, mentions many prominent Broadway and off-Broadway names who have worked with us, at the same level that you did.
And I'm sure they don't consider themselves "amateurs", nor would I consider you one. Few people are becoming wealthy working in the theater, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't consider yourself a professional.
Thanks again for doing this Mac. It's a lovely and insightful read. You are most generous with your words.
